What is the difference between bone and cartilage




















Cartilages are not as hard as bones, found in areas of the ear, nose, and joints in our body. Bones are a type of tissue that comprises blood vessels and cells. These are highly rigid connective tissue that forms the skeleton of vertebrates. They also are storage sites for minerals and provide the medium—marrow—for developing and storing blood cells. Cartilage is a thin, fibrous, flexible connective tissue, mainly found in the external ear, larynx, respiratory tract, and the articulating surface of the joints.

Cartilages lack blood vessels; hence the growth and development of these tissues are slower than other tissues. There are three types of cartilages:.

They build up the skeletal system in the vertebrates. They are made up of collagen, which is a protein. Bones protect the various organs of the body and provide a support framework for the body. They can also produce red and white blood cells and store minerals. They have a complex internal and external structure.

An adult human body consists of bones. Bones are made up of dense connective tissue and contain special bone cells known as osteoblasts, osteocytes and osteoclasts. Bones have a rich supply of blood through a proper vascular system. They have high compressive strength and can create and replace themselves. Bones also contain an essential mineral called Calcium Phosphate. They can store the calcium and release a part of it into the bloodstream.

The thigh bone or Femur is the longest bone in the human body. The stapes in the human ear is the smallest bone. What is Cartilage? Cartilage is a flexible type of connective tissue found in various parts of the body. It is capable of bending but resists stretching. The primary function of cartilage is to connect the bones of a body together. Cartilages are found in the joints between bones like elbows, knees, ankles, rib cage, discs of the spine, ear, nose, throat and bronchioles.

Cartilages keep the joints in motion by cushioning bones against impact. They are not as hard as bones, but they are stiffer and less flexible than normal muscle tissue. There are 3 types of cartilage, namely Fibrocartilage, Hyaline and elastic cartilage. Cartilages are made up of specialized cells known as chondrocytes. An essential feature of the cartilage is that it has no blood vessels. Due to the lack of blood vessels, cartilage cannot heal itself.

Spongy bone. Three types 1. Elastic cartilage. Hyaline cartilage. As said above bone is a rigid tissue of a body, mainly made up material like collagen and calcium phosphate. It is made up of connective tissue. These bone tissues assemble to form the bones of the skeletons, the human skeletal system and of the other vertebrates. The human body contains separate bones in the body of an adult. The largest bone is the femur or thigh-bone, and the smallest bone is the stapes , which is present in the middle ear.

Bones are present in five different shapes in the human body which are flat, long, short, irregular and sesamoid. Another fact is that more than 99 percent of the body is present in the bones and teeth and the rest 1 percent is found in the blood. Vertebrates are the only organisms on the earth, whose body consists of bones. Rest among modern vertebrates it is found in bony fish and in higher classes. The basic functions of bones are : 1.

It provides the structural support to the soft tissue, internal organs against the various mechanical action performed by them like contraction and relaxation of muscles of heart, lungs, etc.

It also acts as a protective site for the special tissues like bone marrow blood-forming system. It is also responsible for giving shape to the body and act as a mineral reservoir, where it controls the level of calcium and phosphate in the body fluids. Cartilage is the kind of connective tissue, but they are soft, firm tissue and are responsible for the flexibility, bending, and muscles stretching.

So these are found at the place where along with the support, flexibility is needed like the joints, ears, nose, as well between the spinal column. Cartilage is nothing but the extracellular matrix present in the connective tissue. This matrix is produced by specialized cells called as chondroblasts. These chondroblasts are found in the matrix of chondrocytes, while lacunae are the space where these cells lie. The chondrocytes determine the level of flexibility of the cartilage.

These are found in the body like the end of the ribs, ears, and nose, bronchial tubes, joints between bones like of elbows, knees, and ankles. Cartilage is of three types: 1. Elastic Cartilage — This type is found in the ear, as it is the most flexible type. Hyaline Cartilage — This type is found at the end of ribs and in the nose, it is the second most flexible type of cartilage.
