How long is the lahaina pali trail

Nice ascent and descent trail. Great views and cool to be up by wind turbines. On clear days you probably see a lot more too. Go early!! We started the hike by and I am glad we did. There is no shade coverage, and we would have been sorry if we had gone later. Definitely a climb, and very windy at the end of it. Amazing views! Left just after six AM, and walked a good part in the shade of the mountain.

Tough trail and on the way down definitely at ankle twister. Nice and quiet though. Over heated had to call the hike a mile in. With the bright sun up with out a cloud In the sky. It does a good job heating the lava rocks that you are walking making it feel like a sauna. Coming early in the morning before it gets hot is a must!! Soooo windy! I cut it too close and went before sunset. Great views the whole way up. I will be going back many times. But once we were able to get on it, it was a great hike.

Definitely hard level. Rocks and steep climb for parts of it. Fun getting misted coming around the mountain, helped make it a unique hike. Great views! Worth it!! Gorgeous sunset. Do not be fooled by the paved trail, the lava boulder stairs are your route. Really windy at the top which was nice because it can get so hot, but hard to hear anything.

Lots of rocks to navigate. But overall really fun and would definitely recommend! Not much diversity in scenery. Devoid of animal life. Great hike with a handful of steep climbs! This one had some great views and the 4.

This trail is actually 5 miles from the parking lot to the peak. Otherwise really beautiful hike. I keep turning around to absorb all the beauty from this trail. The trial is easy to follow. I saw total of 5 people passing very quiet when I went. It's 1. Steps made of big boulders all the way. I would say it was hard because of the weather - I went at 9. The directions from this All trails app leads you close to the parking lot, but not exactly - check google maps, it has 'Lahaina pali trailhead' marked.

Views are incredible! I have also done this trail from the East side Ma'alea. I like that one just a tad better because of the terrain more gradual incline vs boulders , though the ocean view is better from this side. The trail crosses directly through the middle of the wind farm. If you do the mile out-and-back, the return sighting of those turbines is a glorious sight — downhill relief is coming! There are many historical features.

We made it easy, you can download it clicking on the thumbnail to the left. The entire trail is though an area of very low rainfall. Most years, significant storms periodically bring just enough rain so that the parched hillsides temporarily explode with tall, green grasses. But when storms decrease in frequency, the grasses become brown, and very, very dry. This area is highly susceptible to huge uncontrollable brushfires which can be easily sparked by a single wind-blown ember.

Unfortunately several gigantic fires consuming many thousands of acres have happened with some regularity in recent years. Fires on this side of the island can literally completely close off access to West Maui, sometimes for days.

If you look, you will find charred tree remains from past fires. Never smoke or build a fire on this trail. This is also an area with reliably steady and strong winds. View Lahaina Pali Trail in a larger map. Thank you for sharing! Do you know anything about the land ownership or access ability?

Great hike. We started from the Maalea side. We only had two hours so we figured we would turn around at the one hour mark.

Which was at the windmills. Its a fairly tough trail. Up and down. Bring water. Cut your toenails. Fantastic views. Worth every step! We walked by an old matress, shoes, garbage and an abandoned car at the beginning. You have the wrong trail. The Pali trail is steep and Rocky and nowhere near a road except at start and finish.

Hiked from the Lahaina side this morning. Went up to the road by the windmills and turned back. I am guessing that is halfway as the trail looked like it started to go back down. Took me 61 minutes to get to the top, and oddly enough, took me 57 to get back down 55 years old and not as flexible as I once was! Great hike but the humidity was brutal!.

Used about 48 ounces, would like to have had 64, but I also sweat above average. So glad I found this page. Thanks Matt. My girlfriend and I did an out and back- we went from the West side to ighway 30 and back three years ago. Beautiful hike and I highly recommend it. We are both in decent shape I am a marathoner, she just ran a and we got a good workout doing it! Thank you for the very detailed feedback regarding the Pali Trail. Be aware that there are no bathrooms and no place to get water along the trail.

Bring at least two large water bottles per person and hiking boots would be preferred over tennis shoes. Stop to consider for a moment that the ancient Mauians hiked this route regularly, and they did it barefoot.

The ancient Mauians were some tough hombres y mujeres. The wind turbines of the Kaheawa wind turbines come into view here. Your destination lies among the wind turbines, but before you get there, you have to traverse this grassy flat and then dip down into Manawanui Gulch. Although the sudden loss and subsequent gain of elevation may come as an unwelcome development, the gulch is cool and shady, offering a nice place for a rest and a snack.

Interpretive panels offer some info on the wind farm, but the real star here is the view. The full expanse of Haleakala, itself a massive geological feature, dominates the view east. The posh resorts of Wailea sparkle in the distance. Retrace your route, which is vastly easier going downhill. I was not careful, and I ended up backing my rental car into a kiawe tree.

Note: I took the photos on a day when cane farmers set a sugarcane field on fire. This method of harvest burns away all of the excess vegetation, leaving the water-dense sugarcane for easy harvest.

The incineration of the vegetation also puts some nutrients back into the soil. Scott is an L. The trail is often pretty rough, especially on steep sections where erosion have exposed a lot of rocks.
