Google Talk will be discontinued on June 26, It lacks the notifications features which the regular Google Talk Desktop Client provides, but this is great for accessing chat quickly on computers which do not have the desktop client installed.
This is the 2nd way to go offline on GTalk. Gmail already has the option of instant messaging your friends via the GTalk gadget that can be enabled in the sidebar. The same option is now also available on iGoogle. This is another option to stay invisible while being signed in. If you use Gmail quite often this would be the more convenient option. There is a small limitation, however. As soon as you un-check this option, you will notice that the little green dot disappears and now you are invisible on Hangouts.
We have tested this functionality multiple times and confirmed that it really makes you appear offline for your contacts. So now you are invisible on hangouts, but what if you do not want to be bothered by anyone who tries to contact you on Hangouts? Step 1: Click on the Gear icon from the top right corner and open Settings option. They can see when you are online, too. Your friend or colleague can automatically see when you're online throughout the Google Talk network— via Gmail , for example—and available for chat.
If you can forego that convenience and want to decide for yourself when your contacts can tell whether you are online, Gmail provides this level of control as well.
To protect your online status from showing up automatically in Gmail and turn off the chat feature for all your contacts. Click the Gear Settings icon in the top right corner from any screen in Gmail. Click See All Settings in the menu that appears.
Select the Chat and Meet tab. Click the radio button next to Hangouts off to hide your online status and chat availability. Click Save Changes. When Gmail reloads, the chat window is no longer be visible. Here's what to do if you only want to mute the notifications of chat for a set amount of time.
If you mute notifications, people will still be able to see that you're online, but you won't receive alerts if they message you. Click the arrow next to your name in the chat panel.
In the next menu, click the Mute Notifications for Click the amount of time you'd like to mute notifications. You can silence them for 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, or 24 hours, three days, or a week. Click Resume under your name to unmute the notifications before the block expires. Invisible Mode may not exist anymore, but you have some control over who contacts you. Go back into the menu under the arrow next to your name, and then select Customize Invite Settings.
