When Fugate returned to the United States, she posted a video blog about her time away from the internet and music industry, and shared her experiences over the summer which was spent at Hever Castle , the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, whom Fugate stated she had felt a deep connection with.

Fugate posted a video at on January stating she was back, and alive and well and ready to resume work on her new album. In Corinna Fugate legally changed her name to Rose Mercury explaining why in a video blog she released on YouTube in January of Mercury stated that she had experienced a rebirth over the summer, and changing her name to Rose Mercury was a part of her rebirth as a spirit and as an artist.

Mercury also stated in her video blog that she felt warmth in her veins for the first time,warmth like mercury, and no longer felt "cold inside"; a reference to the first single she released from her independent album, Undertow, entitled Cold.

In January of Rose Mercury also relaunched her MySpace music page, and released a new music video on January 21st, for her haunting, and stirring new single which features heavy guitar merging with harpsichord, Heart Like A Grave, in the video Mercury appeared nude in a bathtub filled with apples garnishing much attention and notice from the online community.

When Mercury turned 14, she began figure skating at the local Ice Chateau in Florida where she was living at the time, taking lessons from a trainer who had competed in the Olympics.

Mercury found solace there, skating on the ice, and won several local competitions, winning several gold medals. She chose not to go on with this path however, but, for a time in her life, figure skating offered Mercury great relief and inner peace.

In April , Mercury took her first trip to Holland. She toured where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis for 4 long years, and felt a deep bond with Anne while she was there, standing in Anne's old bedroom. Mercury decided to use her life to try to help end prejudice then, as much as she could. Mercury found herself returning to the Anne Frank House more than 4 times while in Holland, as if being drawn there as if by some supernatural force.

At age fifteen, Mercury was uprooted yet again when her mother decided to move to California. Living in California now, she enrolled in a local high school, but struggled in her personal life.

Mercury had been diagnosed with clinical depression at this time, and began trying to numb her pain with alcohol. She had never coped with the death of her father and the alcohol seemed to make everything go numb for her. However, at age 15 Mercury was a full fledged alcoholic, and she ran away from home for three months. Relocating to Kansas at age 16, Mercury's interests spread to early music Baroque and Renaissance as well as opera, classical, and rock.

Mercury also began to develop a love of ballet. However, Mercury's great love affair was with the piano, and it began then. Mercury is a self taught pianist, and began writing songs on her piano, her first song being about the sky and fairies. This is a song no one has heard, and it has never been released. When Mercury was 17 she spent the autumn in Italy, breathing and living their culture, and art. She saw Michelangelo's david, the Sistine Chapel, and strolled the cobblestone streets of the town of Verona, the town where the real Romeo and Juliet lived.

She toured Juliet's balcony. The play Shakesphere wrote, Mercury learned, was based on a poem written by an Italian man, who was writing about a true event.

That autumn, Mercury also spent some time in Switzerland, surrounded by the peace of Lake Geneva. It was , and music was blooming inside her. When Mercury returned home from seeing Italy and Switzerland, she began writing more original songs, and decided to perform them publically. When Mercury began performing publicly, she experienced something unexpected.

Stage fright. One night before a show she found herself scratching and clawing at her leg, and left the area without a word. Mercury then began the act of "cutting". Mercury became a self injurer due to her stage fright, and she would secretly lock herself in bathroom stalls before her concerts, cut herself, bandage herself, then go on with the show.

She has stated the pain gave her something to focus on other than her fear. However, things could not continue in this direction, and Mercury knew it. After a few months of secretly being a "cutter" she sought help from a doctor, and began a slow recovery, and eventually overcame self injury once and for all. It was a long, hard fight, but she won it. According to The Olathe News, she had been approached by record labels, but declined, wanting to "keep artistic control.

Mercury became an instant local celebrity in Kansas City at a very young age. Chasing the Ghost confronts a number of issues that Mercury was dealing with in her own life, most notably recovering from alcohol dependency. The Pitch Weekly wrote, "Corinna has paid her dues in life and very well may be the jewel in Kansas City's crown. She is not someone who was inspired to become a singer and a writer the first time she saw a Jewel video.

Fugate deals with pain in this album, giving it weight. She started to gain a following of her own, and began immersing herself in writing. However, Mercury had a stalker at that time, and her life had been threatened numerous times, and it was serious. The police were involved, and things finally settled down, but the event frightened Mercury from playing live for the next year and a half, because she was afraid this person would come to the show and fulfill his promise to kill her.

It was then that Mercury launched a Myspace page, from her home in Tennessee. She uploaded her music, and the response was fast, unexpected, and powerful. Within one year of Mercury's page being up, she had over one million page views, and twice as many song plays.

Her fans were loyal to her, treating her with respect and kindness.
