That is THE definition of totalitarianism. Well, technically, when you look at the beliefs and ideology of communism, it is not the same as totalitarianism.
It is simply often confused with totalitarianism regime due Stalin and the policies he used. He effectively sold the idea of communism, while in reality forming a totalitarian state. He employed spies in the communist parties of other countries to ensure they were pro-Stalin and pro-Soviet. Political scientist actually classify the Soviet Union and North-Korea as a fascist or totalitarian regime, rather than communist.
Totalitarianism is often to used to refer to a totalitarian rule, not a totalistic vision. I swear to god, sometimes people just like to twist and turn stuff to fit their mindset in order not to call themselves wrong. This is an article written by someone ignorant of political science or intent on deceiving as many as possible. What determines left or right is the government system itself. Large, powerful government with great control over the individual and minimal to no individual rights is ALWAYS left and the moreso it is, the more left extremism it is.
The opposite of one totalitarian state is NOT another one. Right wing extremism is no government control of the individual. The creation of the US was at that time an experimental system of government of limited and decentralized power with a federal system that had little control over the individual and specific individual rights were claimed by the people. In addition our system was set up specifically as a contract -whereby the people AGREE to be governed as long as government abides by the specific rules as set out in the Constitution and retain the right to withdraw that consent if government violates or abandons their end of this contract.
Stalin once claimed Nazism was the opposite of communism and leftists have been repeating that lie ever since because if the left can convince people both sides seek massive, powerful government with great control of the individual, they can pretend the only debate is pretending communists want it for touchy-feely reasons and the right wants it to gas people in ovens.
In reality nazis and communists agreed very well on the system of government and only had what in the grand scheme of things is just a minor disagreement about who wields all that state power. The USSR routinely imprisoned political prisoners, sent them to Siberia, work prison and even to mental institutions and forced them to undergo electrick shock therapy and chemical fugues -on the premise only a crazy person would reject the unicorns and rainbows communism brings to the people. Politely speaking, I have to disagree with you.
In the United States, the meaning of left and right is far different from left and right overseas. What the United States considers conservative right wing in this country is liberal and leftist in other states. What is considered left in the United States is considered right overseas. For example, the U. Therefore, it is right wing. However, fascism, totalitarianism, dictatorship, monarchism, absolutism, etc and etc is considered to be part of the right wing overseas.
Over here in America, this is considered left wing. Total Government control in America means left while total Government control overseas is right wing or in some cases far right. I tend to rely on the international definition of right and left instead of the American definition.
However, I respect and value your opinion and you are entitled to it. Yeah, I guess fascism and nazism are totally a-ok and not radical. Stalin lead USSR was totalitarian. Today the US is becoming totalitarian and is fascist for its killing of nearly 30 million people across the globe post ww2. So lets not get emotional when we here about democracy, communism, socialism, etc. What a ludicrous and uneducated comparison. Too much wrong with it to bother point-by-point refutation.
Communism and totalitarianism are one in the same, because the majority will never go willingly into such a system. Put it to a vote in any country around the world and see. They are always coerced into it. It is against human nature. And by the way, the labor theory of value is complete rubbish. This page is propaganda or completely confused. Totalitarianism is not right wing nor is it left wing.
A totalitarian regime could be left or right. It would be on the axis of authoritarianism and liberalism. As many commenters have said, communist regimes have been totalitarian. Common ownership really means state ownership. Let us read true history and understand it properly. Propaganda masked as history makes so many people anti-communist and it has been actinh on our society in a toxic way. This is absolutely the biggest crock of shit I have ever read!

The primary goal is to govern through fair representation and prevent abuses of power. The result is a system that requires discourse, debate, and compromise to satisfy the broadest possible number of public interests, leading to majority rule.
Democracies advocate for fair and free elections, civic participation, human rights protections, and law and order. Iceland had numerous forms of government following its settlement in AD. An independent commonwealth, monarchs, and colonial governments ruled the island for thousands of years.
After signing a treaty with Denmark in , Iceland became a fully independent and sovereign state. The county founded its republic in and has since risen to become one of the world's highest-ranked democracies through systems of social welfare, universal health care, and tertiary education. Communism is a centralized form of government led by a single party that is often authoritarian in its rule. Inspired by German philosopher Karl Marx, communist states replace private property and a profit-based economy with public ownership and communal control of economic production, such as labor, capital goods, and natural resources.
Citizens are part of a classless society that distributes goods and services as needed. The Soviet Union was a one-party, communist state in Northern Eurasia from to Most modern communist states embrace Marxism-Leninism, a communist ideology based on Marx and Russian revolutionary and politician Vladimir Lenin's doctrines. Socialism is a system that encourages cooperation rather than competition among citizens.
Citizens communally own the means of production and distribution of goods and services, while a centralized government manages it. Each person benefits from and contributes to the system according to their needs and ability.
They all adhere to socialist policies that combine free-market capitalism with extensive public works, including free healthcare, free education, a comprehensive welfare state, and high percentages of unionized workers. This approach essentially combines the collective nature of communism with the private ownership and competitiveness of capitalism. Oligarchies are governments in which a collection of individuals rules over a nation. A specific set of qualities, such as wealth, heredity, and race, are used to give a small group of people power.
Oligarchies often have authoritative rulers and an absence of democratic practices or individual rights. The government that ruled South Africa from to was a racially constructed oligarchy.
The minority white population exercised dominance and imposed segregation over the nation's majority Black population, controlling policy, public administration, and law enforcement. Following an anti-apartheid movement, the country adopted a liberal democracy that ultimately gave all ethnic and linguistic groups in South Africa political representation.
Aristocracy refers to a government form in which a small, elite ruling class — the aristocrats — have power over those in lower socioeconomic strata. Members of the aristocracy are usually chosen based on their education, upbringing, and genetic or family history. Aristocracies often connect wealth and ethnicity with both the ability and right to rule.
The concept of totalitarianism was developed in the s by Italian fascists. Still, most Western civilizations and governments quickly rejected the concept of totalitarianism and continue to do so today.
One distinctive feature of totalitarian governments is the existence of an explicit or implied national ideology—a set of beliefs intended to give meaning and direction to the entire society. Examples of characteristics that might be present in a totalitarian state include:.
Typically, the characteristics of a totalitarian state tend to cause people to fear their government. An authoritarian state is characterized by a strong central government that allows people a limited degree of political freedom.
However, the political process, as well as all individual freedom, is controlled by the government without any constitutional accountability. The government controls nearly all aspects of the economy, politics, culture, and society. Education, religion, the arts and sciences, and even morality and reproductive rights are controlled by totalitarian governments.
While all power in an authoritarian government is held by a single dictator or group, the people are allowed a limited degree of political freedom.
Rarely employed since the end of World War II in , fascism is a form of government combining the most extreme aspects of both totalitarianism and authoritarianism. Even when compared to extreme nationalistic ideologies like Marxism and anarchism , fascism is typically considered to be at the far-right end of the political spectrum.
Fascism is characterized by the imposition of dictatorial power, government control of industry and commerce, and the forcible suppression of opposition, often at the hands of the military or a secret police force. To this end, fascists encourage the growth of cults of national unity and racial purity. Historically, the primary function of fascist regimes has been to maintain the nation in a constant state of readiness for war.
Fascists observed how rapid, mass military mobilizations during World War I blurred the lines between the roles of civilians and combatants. In addition, fascists view democracy and the electoral process as an obsolete and unnecessary obstacle to maintaining constant military readiness. They also consider a totalitarian, one-party state as the key to preparing the nation for war and its resulting economic and social hardships. Today, few governments publicly describe themselves as fascist.
Instead, the label is more often used pejoratively by those critical of particular governments or leaders. Actively scan device characteristics for identification. Use precise geolocation data.
